Chakras are seven interconnected vital energy centers in the body. They transcend the physical form.
The chakras basically run lengthwise along the body from the base of the spine (tailbone) to the top of the head. The location of each chakra corresponds to a dense center of nerves.
Understanding chakras, and how to heal them, is an important part of Ayurvedic medicine and other forms of eastern medicine.
Although this type of training is not traditionally part of western medicine, healing chakras is becoming an increasingly accepted complementary treatment in many western medical centers.
East meets West!
The word "chakra" comes from the ancient Sanskrit word for a round spoked wheel. The shape of the wheel represents the facts that each chakra is a spinning sphere of energy.
The spokes of the wheel represent how each chakra interconnects with all the others to produce a continual flow of energy throughout the body.
The seven chakras of the body
1. First chakra. The Muladhara chakra. Root chakra or base chakra. The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, the bladder, and the colon. This chakra gives you a sense of safety and being grounded in life.
2. Second chakra. The Swadhisthana chakra. Sacral chakra. The sacral chakra is located between the pubic bone and the navel. This chakra gives you creativity, sexuality and pleasure.
4. Fourth chakra. The Anahata chakra. Heart chakra. The heart chakra is located in the center of the chest above the heart. This chakra gives you inner peace, joy, and the ability to connect with others.
5. Fifth chakra. The Vishuddha chakra. Throat chakra. The throat chakra is located at the level of the neck and mouth. This chakra gives you the ability to speak the truth and express yourself.
6. Sixth chakra. The Ajna chakra. Third eye chakra or Brow chakra. The brow chakra is located in the middle of the forehead between the two eyebrows. This chakra gives you intuition, higher wisdom, imagination, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions.
7. Seventh chakra. The Sahasrara chakra. Crown chakra or Thousand petal chakra. The crown chakra is located on top of the head. This chakra makes you an enlightened human being.
How to recognize if your chakras are blocked or unbalanced
Pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you. Any physical disease, mental stress, or emotional distress are signs that your chakras are out of balance.
Constipation and general fatigue are signs of a blocked root chakra. Sexual dysfunction, sexual disinterest, menstrual problems, and fertility issues are all signs of a blocked sacral chakra.
Gastrointestinal issues or a lack of will power are indicative of a blocked solar plexus chakra. Cardiovascular disease or an indifference to other people are signs of a blocked heart chakra.
Thyroid issues, sore throat, and difficulty expressing emotions all indicate a blocked throat chakra. Headaches, depression, and poor intuition are all signs of a blocked brow chakra. Bad dreams and insomnia are signs of a blocked crown chakra.
A healthy lifestyle helps to maintain your chakras
There are many advanced techniques for unblocking your chakras and keeping the energy flowing evenly between them. However, you should always keep in mind that the simple act of living a healthy lifestyle will go a long way toward keeping your chakras healthy.
This means eating a healthy well balanced nutrient dense diet, getting some exercises every week, making sure you get plenty of sleep, spending quality time with your family and friends, and keeping your overall stress level reasonably low.
A simple method to heal your chakras
Find a peaceful place to relax. This will vary depending on the person. For some, the most peaceful place would be lying in their bed with the lights off and their eyes closed. For others, driving to a beautiful spot and going out on a serene landscape might work better.
This serene outdoor spot might be something as simple as a small duck pond or favorite tree or as majestic as a mountain or a rocky shoreline. Others may prefer the solace and convenience of their own backyard garden.
The location really doesn't matter as long as it is a place that inspires peaceful thoughts in you and helps you to relax.
Imagine a radiant beam of beautiful light showering down upon you. You can make this radiant light a rainbow of colors or choose your favorite color.
Spend some time basking in the warmth of this beautiful light. Let it shimmer upon you. Allow your muscles to relax and your conscious mind to wander into an almost lucid dream state.
Once your body and mind have completely relaxed, mentally focus the shower of radiant light into one strong beam and aim it directly at your root chakra. Allow this focused light to fill your root chakra. Imagine the light spinning and vibrating in a clockwise direction.
Don't rush the process. Spend as much time as you need for this chakra to feel transcended. Once this has happened, slowly let the beam of light move to the next chakra and repeat the same process.
Spend extra time on any chakra you have identified as being blocked. Be patient and allow things to happen naturally.
After you have healed each chakra, allow the light to ebb and flow like the tide of an ocean washing ashore and then back out again. Let the light flow from one chakra to another and then back again.
Allow a natural rhythm to develop in this process and revel in the music it creates. This will help you spread your energy more evenly between chakras and promote harmony between them. It will also help connect your mind and body more fully.
Slowly allow yourself to return to full consciousness refreshed and rejuvenated.
Some people like to think of chakras as invisible interconnected rechargeable batteries! From a practical point of view, this is a great way to think about them since you should always take the time to recharge your chakras and make sure the energy is flowing evenly between them.
By starting out with the simple method above and living a healthy lifestyle, you will start to transform your life and prepare yourself for more advanced techniques of keeping your chakras healthy.
